Orange Botswana Purpose
Orange Botswana is one of the leading multinational mobile network operators in Botswana having served Botswana since 1998. The organization started operating as Vista Cellular and later rebranded to Orange in 2003. It forms part of the International Orange Group based in France which operates in 26 countries across the world.
Our primary focus is to provide mobile telephony services, internet connectivity and more recently, financial solutions via Orange Money, a mobile money service thereby broadening its scope beyond mobile networks.
Orange Botswana’s strategy or ambition is to take market leadership in mobile and fixed broadband through an unmatched customer experience, becoming the preferred financial and multi services provider as well as a key player for innovation in digital inclusion recognized by the Government and Botswana.
Vision: Becoming a leader in Mobile, Fixed Broadband, Financial and Digital Solutions in Botswana
Current projects Orange is carrying out
We, in 2011, introduced the Orange Social Venture Prize in Africa and the Middle East, which is aimed at rewarding innovative projects based on Information and Communication technologies (ICT) which improve the living conditions of people in Africa and the Middle East in fields such as education, healthcare, agriculture, mobile payments and sustainable development.
We are also passionate about sports development in Botswana, and the sponsorship of the Orange Phikwe National Marathon and introduction of the beloved loved Orange FA Cup in partnership with Botswana Football Association are both testament to this.
The latter gives the first division league teams an opportunity to play with elite teams in the Premier League and grow the football culture we all love so dearly.
Orange Botswana established the Digital Schools Programme in 2017, with the aim of enhancing students’ classroom experiences by diversifying learning activities by providing a combination of technology, content and instruction.
We introduced the Women’s Digital Centre programme in 2018, these are designed to capacitate women with basic business management skills, promote digital inclusion and digital literacy through the provision of technical equipment such as computers, laptops, projectors, tablets, printers, as well as basic software familiarity. To date, hundreds of women have been directly impacted at 6 Centres across Botswana.
Recent partnerships to boost company’s activities going forward
As Orange Botswana we are committed to partnering with the government of Botswana for growth, innovation and to transform the digital technology and ICT sectors in Botswana.
A big driver for us of this is through the annual Orange Social Ventures Prize which is a competition that has happened here in Botswana for 11 years.
The competition is purposed to reward local technology start-ups that offer innovative solutions to a myriad of issues challenging, communities in Botswana in the arenas of agriculture, education, energy, industry and trade.
The role of technology/digitalization in the company
Technology is the heart of everything we do here at Orange, we are a tech company above all, and innovation is what drives us and with every change our employees and our customers remain at the core, making sure that their lives are improved for the better and to ensure that the complexity of technology is not visible but the benefits are far reaching and clear.
We are very happy to have significantly improve coverage, speed in mobile data, and because of that Botswana has been ranked fourth in Africa because of our continued efforts here at Orange.
Orange Money Partner Testimonial
CSR activities and the impact of the company on the community
CSR is in our DNA, I believe that our first contribution is being able to add tangible value to the country, through the economic boost that we provide to the country by providing access to connectivity and financial tools. I am proud to say that, through the Orange Foundation, we have fully integrated technology into education with a programme named Digital Schools.
The programme was launched in partnership with the Ministries of Basic Education and Local Government and Rural Development, respectively. Through this programme technology is able to serve children in rural areas, giving them access to digital tools to enhance their performance.
Similarly, we have launched Women’s Digital Centres to up-skill women on technology, business and financial management.
The programme is implemented in partnership with local NGOs to curb poverty amongst women in Botswana. The Orange Foundation has so far set up 6 Women’s Digital Centres and more than 300 women benefit from these each day.
We have also recently made a massive investment with the development of the Orange Digital Centre, to be able to teach the youth to code, experiment with 3D printing, laser cutters and the latest cutting edge technologies, so that we can elevate their skills, and produce employable young people. With this investment we intend to train at least 800 youth per annum.
